Sugarcubes Flat Collection, October 2023
Five look collection inspired by my experience listening to and understanding of the avant-pop band the Sugarcubes' music throughout my life. The journey from listening to their albums as a child, not even hearing the lyrics and instead being excited by fun, peculiar noises, to listening for the meaning and understanding themes of love, naivety, death, religion, anxiety, and more, is shown through the progression of this collection from look 1 to 5.
Motifs include Icelandic staves for dreamed desires, protection, and love-casting, elements of historic Scandinavian dress, ancient Norse myths of the end of the world, and sheer layering in reference to Nordic layered clothing, the Sugarcube's maximal and busy music, and Björk's dress while the band was active.
Three textiles were designed for this collection, the Skin Imprint Quilt, Dream Stave, and Ragnarok fabrics. The Skin Imprint Quilt was made using images of used blotting papers, showing patterns of one's skin and essentially, creating an afterimage of touching one's face - an abstracted idea of 'gross love' that the Sugarcubes wrote about often, that is distorted into a bright, happy, colorful textile for a skirt, that to the naive eye is just a simple colorful fabric.
